苏州大学的前身为创建于1900年的东吴大学，1950年苏州国立社会教育学院、江苏省立教育学院、中国文学院合并组建苏南文化教育学院。1952年由东吴大学文理学院、苏南文化教育学院、江南大学数理系合并组建苏南师范学院，同年更名为江苏师范学院。1981年学校被国务院批准为首批博士、硕士学位授予单位。1982年学校复名苏州大学。其后，苏州蚕桑专科学校、苏州丝绸工学院和苏州医学院等相继并入。

Soochow University (Soochow University), founded in 1900 and located in Suzhou, is one of the "Double First-Class" universities co-operated by the Ministry of Education and the Government of Jiangsu Province. It is one of the first batch of universities listed in the "Project 211" and "2011 Plan". It is also co-operated by the State Administration of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defence and the Government of Jiangsu Province. Jiangsu Province is a key comprehensive university. The university has been selected as one of the national "111 Program", "Excellent Legal Talents Education and Training Program", "Excellent Engineer Education and Training Program", "Excellent Doctor Education and Training Program", "State-sponsored Postgraduate Program of the National Construction of High-level University", a national demonstration university for deepening the reform of innovation and entrepreneurship education, and a host institution of Chinese Government Scholarship for international students. Soochow University was formerly known as Soochow University, which was founded in 1900. In 1950, Suzhou National College of Social Education, Jiangsu Provincial College of Education, and Chinese Academy of Literature merged to form the Southern Jiangsu College of Culture and Education. 1952 The College of Arts and Sciences of Soochow University, the College of Culture and Education of South Jiangsu and the Department of Mathematics and Science of Jiangnan University were merged to form Jiangsu Normal College. In the same year, it was renamed Jiangsu Normal College. In 1981, the university was approved by the State Council as the first batch of doctorate and master degree awarding units. 1982 It was renamed Soochow University. Later, suzhou sericulture academy, suzhou silk engineering institute and suzhou medical college were merged in one after another.
